Photos

The Beyond the Curtain Project has taken over 35,000 photographs inside North Korea. Explore Behind the Curtain is a volume of over 1,000 pages highlighting a collection of the most interesting images taken. The photos exhibit diverse aspects of the country; its beauty and sometimes its darker side.

Subjects range from chemical weapons factories, military installations, remote natural beauty, the omnipresent propaganda, cities, towns, and villages together with posed portraits of North Korean citizens that the regime has approved as "suitable" for us to meet.

Analysis

The North Korean "Kim Family Cult" is propagated by the world's largest myth making factory, the state-controlled media apparatus. Explore Behind the Curtain analyses and explains how these myths keep the Kims in power.

Censored Images

Explore Behind the Curtain features stunning photography taken inside North Korea. Frequently taken without approval or deleted by regime censors, we have recovered images that were considered unacceptable or too sensitive for outsiders.

Deceptive Manufacturing

Explore Behind the Curtain takes you to factories and processing plants that produce products that disguise their North Korean origin. Tour Songbong Textiles and watch as the workers sew clothing labeled "Made in China."

Bypassing Sanctions

North Korean fish is exported to countries that ban North Korean products, including South Korea, Japan, and the United States. Explore Behind the Curtain takes you deep inside factories and processing plants that produce products that disguise their North Korean origin.

Natural Beauty

North Korea features unspoiled, pristine national parks and forests. Explore Behind the Curtain allows you to journey deep into incredibly remote areas that require days of travel to reach.
